American Black Bear

This image shows the difference in build between black bears and brown bears

This bear, also known as Ursus americanus, is more closely related to the Asian Black bear than any other species, due to a common ancestor.

The American black bear is also one of the smallest, if not the smallest, species of black bear.  The IUCN as listed this bear as lest concern, due to its large numbers and distribution globally.

It is believed that the American black bear has been the inspiration for many things such as the teddy bear and even Winnie-The-Pooh!

I believe this bear to have completely black, course hair.

These bears can typically be found in North America.

Altogether I believe that there are 16 sub-species of the American Black bear, including Ursus americanus floridanus, which has a lighter colour nose and shiny black fur.

Another sub-species of the black bear is the Kermode or Spirit bear. This amazing bear has a cream-coloured coat which is due to a recessive gene.

The American Black bear is one of the gentlest of bears, but has had a great impact on the number of farmer’s cattle.
