Kermode Bear (Spirit Bear)

The Kermode bear, Ursus americanus kermodei, or ‘spirit bear’ or ‘ghost bear’ as it is more commonly known, is actually counted as a black bear despite its cream colour.

The Kermode bear is actually not a separate species of bear, but is a white-coloured sub-species of the American Black Bear. However only about one tenth of Kermode bears actually have the white coat. The white colour is believed to be a gene mutation as these bears are not albino or closely related to polar bears.

Kermode bears have appeared in many stories and myths and are highly regarded by many people. They can be found in around the Islands of British Columbia and Canada in the jungle areas.

A male can reach 225kg and a female is likely to weigh 135kg at the most.
