Utah Prairie Dog

The Utah Prairie dog (Cynomys parvidens) is the smallest member of the prairie dog family (Cynomys). All prairie dogs belong to the squirrel family.

The diet of the Utah Prairie dog is mainly made up of seeds, vegetation and berries, and sometimes small insects.

The general colour for this species of prairie dog is a tan colour although some are a more grey colour. Many also have dark streaks and markings on their coats, a common one being a line mimicking a elongated eye brow above each eye.

Compared to other prairie dogs, the Utah prairie dog has rather large eyes.

Utah Prairie dogs live in a series of complex tunnels, also called ‘Prairie dog towns’, underground. These series of tunnels will normally house one extended family of prairie dogs, as they are very sociable and prefer to live in groups. These tunnels that they make not only house them but also a range of snakes, owls and other rodents.

Unfortunately, Utah prairie dogs are classified by the IUCN as being ‘Endangered’. Today, there are only believed to be around 2,000 individuals in the wild.
