Dartmoor Ponies

Dartmoor is in Devon, England.

Like all wild ponies they are timid and shy but the mothers are very protective about their foals. If you annoy them they can bite so watch out!

Did you know that the true Dartmoor ponies are bay or sometimes black. The other Dartmoor ponies that you see, have most likely been introduced. For an example; the Skewbald and Piebald ponies.

Some Dartmoor ponies have Shetland blood in them.

If you do go to dartmoor sometime and you see some ponies you must remember that they are wild and that they aren't used to people. So you musn't stroke them because they could behave aggresively towards you. A wild ponies natural diet is mainly grass, therefor you musn't feed them any of your food as it could react with them and make them ill. If ponies are constantly fed it could encourage them to wait at the roadside where there is a danger, as cars do sometimes go along too fast, which could cause accisdents.

Anyone can visit Dartmoor ponies, you just have to have a trip to Dartmoor!

Every Autumn the Drift takes place. This is where people go out on their horses or Quad bikes and they round up all the ponies. What often happens is farmers say a certain number are theirs and they take them to have a look at them and check they're all well and have no injuries. Sometimes you'll find that the ponies have a tag or have been branded that way farmers can be certain that they are their ponies.
