Tibetan Blue Bear (Himalayan Snow Bear)

The Tibetan blue bear is a sub-species of the brown bear. Its scientific name is Ursus arctos pruinosus. This bear, also referred to as the ‘Himalayan Snow Bear’ is often found in the eastern Tibetan plateau. Other names for this bear include:Tibetan brown bear, Himalayan blue bear, Tibetan snow bear and the horse bear, and in Tibetan it is called ‘Dom Gyamuk’.

The Tibetan blue bear was first classified in 1854 and is one of the rarest sub-species of brown bear in the world. Few people have seen this bear. A lot of people who claim to have seen this bear have actually seen the Gobi bear; a very similar species of brown bear which is even rarer than the Himalayan snow bear, as there are only believed to be 30 individuals of the Gobi bear species left in the wild.

Characteristic to all Actos Actos (Brown bear) species, the Tibetan brown bear has powerful shoulder muscles for running and digging.

It is believed that many sightings of the Yeti have actually been of the Tibetan blue bare. Indeed a search expedition once went out to look for the Yeti and came back with two scraps of what they believed to be Yeti fur. Later after scientists had studied it, the fur was found to be from a pelt of a Tibetan blue bear.
